Do you need protein powder?

No. You might still want it. Powder is a convenience food that happens to be sold like a performance drug, and separating those two things makes the decision straightforward.

What it actually is

Whey is a by-product of cheesemaking. When milk is separated into curds and liquid, the liquid — whey — is filtered and dried. It's a complete protein with all nine essential amino acids, it's high in leucine, and it digests quickly. It is, quite literally, filtered milk.

Casein is the other milk protein, the one that forms the curds. It digests slowly, releasing amino acids over several hours, which is why it's suggested before sleep.

Plant powders — pea, rice, soy, hemp — vary more. Soy is complete on its own. Pea is low in methionine and rice is low in lysine, which is why blends of the two are common and sensible.

The important part: your body doesn't distinguish between amino acids from a shaker and amino acids from a chicken breast. Once digested, they're the same molecules entering the same pool. Powder isn't a superior category of protein — it's protein that's already been separated and dried for you.

Whey concentrate, isolate, or hydrolysate?

These are stages of filtering, and the differences are smaller than the price gaps suggest:

  • Concentrate — roughly 70–80% protein, with some lactose and fat remaining. Cheapest, and fine for nearly everyone.
  • Isolate — filtered further to around 90% protein, with most lactose removed. Worth the premium if you're lactose intolerant or counting calories tightly. Otherwise not.
  • Hydrolysate — partially pre-broken-down for faster absorption. Expensive, tastes worse, and the practical benefit for a general trainee is negligible.

Concentrate unless you have a specific reason otherwise.

When a shake genuinely earns its place

There are real cases, and they're all about practicality:

  • Your target is high and food alone is a slog. At 180 g a day, one shake covering 25 g removes a meaningful daily obstacle.
  • Your appetite is the limiting factor. Liquid calories are much easier to consume than solid ones when you're not hungry — particularly for older adults, where poor appetite and elevated protein needs often coincide.
  • You have no time or no kitchen. A shaker at a desk beats no protein at all.
  • You're vegan. Hitting a high target on plants alone is possible but takes planning; a soy or blended powder makes it substantially easier.
  • Breakfast is your weak meal. It usually is, and it's the meal where people least want to cook.

When it isn't worth it

  • You already hit your target with food. Additional protein above your requirement doesn't do anything special because it arrived as a powder.
  • You're using it to compensate for not training. It won't. Training is the signal; protein is the material.
  • You enjoy eating and have time to cook. Whole foods bring fibre, micronutrients and satiety that powder doesn't.

Is it good value?

Sometimes, and it's easy to check. Divide the price of the tub by the total grams of protein it contains — servings × protein per serving — and compare against what you'd otherwise buy.

Whey concentrate usually comes out competitive with chicken breast per gram of protein and clearly cheaper than most convenience high-protein foods. What it rarely beats is eggs, tinned fish, or own-brand cottage cheese. Ready-to-drink bottled shakes and protein bars are almost always the most expensive protein in the shop, because you're paying for packaging and convenience rather than protein.

The comparison that flatters powder most is against protein bars. The one that flatters it least is against a bag of dried lentils.

Buying it sensibly

Supplements are regulated much more loosely than medicines in most countries. Manufacturers are largely responsible for their own quality control, and enforcement is generally reactive. Two practical consequences:

  • Look for third-party testing. Certifications such as Informed Sport or NSF Certified for Sport mean an independent lab has verified the contents. This matters most if you're a tested athlete, where a contaminated product is your problem regardless of intent.
  • Be a bit more careful with plant powders. Independent testing has repeatedly found higher heavy-metal levels in some plant-based protein powders than in whey, because plants take up metals such as cadmium and lead from soil. It isn't a reason to avoid them, but it's a reason to prefer brands that publish testing.

Ignore proprietary blends that don't disclose amounts, and ignore added "anabolic" compounds. If a product's marketing is doing more work than its ingredients list, that's information.

The short version

Protein powder is a reasonable, usually well-priced convenience food. It is not required, it is not superior to food, and it will not compensate for inconsistent training or an inadequate daily total.

If you're short of your target and a shake is the easiest way to close the gap, use one. If you're already hitting it, save the money.
